Hurricane Beryl update August 2024 As of August 9 much of the tree debris has been collected in Westbury. This week is heavy trash and hopefully fencing and other material will be picked up. Centerpoint has a new outage map. They are also working on areas that routinely lose power.
The WCC is very pleased to announce that the Dr. Shannon Walker Library (11630 Chimney Rock) in Westbury will be open tomorrow, Sunday July 14, as a cooling center and as a library from 10am-6pm!! One of the Westbury Civic Club’s top requests to the City of Houston was for a cooling center in our neighborhood. Specifically at the brand new library but first it needed power. We reached out to our District K City Councilmember, Martha Castex-Tatum about when the electric grid to the library would be activated so this could happen. She has been working tirelessly with her team and Centerpoint and we are excited to announce that Centerpoint delivered a giant generator today and the library has power and will be a much needed cooling center for Westbury residents as well as others in our area still without power. We know this does not replace the power to homes that people so desperately need, but this is a great resource to have directly in our neighborhood. Please spread the word to your neighbors who might not be on social media. Big huge thank you to Martha Castex-Tatum who made this happen. Thank you to Centerpoint for delivering the generator.
PDATED Westbury Power Restoration Map
The Westbury Civic Club has been driving each night to check progress and to produce a map that will let residents know what is happening. The Green lines are streets that have been restored (there may be nestled outages of a few homes within these green streets) and the yellow lines indicate streets where one side has power. The streets with no lines do not have power. It's dark and sometimes difficult to tell so there may be a few errors. As of July 14, 1AM Centerpoint is slowly making progress restoring power to Westbury homes. Tonight’s canvass showed power restored to several streets in Westbury South, almost all remaining areas of Westbury 1 and more streets in Westbury 2. Many trucks and crews were in Westbury throughout the day working hard to fix our damaged areas and restore power. Centerpoint message - “CenterPoint Energy has now restored 80% of customers impacted by Hurricane Beryl and is on track to restore power to approximately 85% by the end of this weekend. CenterPoint has now provided estimated restoration dates to substantially all customers who are without power. As work progresses, the company may be able to restore power sooner than expected. To date, CenterPoint has largely restored customers by the estimated dates provided to them in the restoration tracker, and in many cases, earlier than expected.” Reality - Most of Westbury now has estimated restoration dates on the Centerpoint map, even areas already with power, so please be aware there are still ongoing map detail issues. It is likely some areas will get turned on before their restoration date, however it is also just as likely that some will be after, due to extensive damage. Please be aware that if you have damage on your line, especially downed lines or trees on them, power restoration is likely to be delayed past the date given by Centerpoint. We believe there is a high chance that the dates given by Centerpoint for restoration are for energizing each area, not necessarily fully restoring power to all homes. If this is the case, you need to be prepared for longer outages while awaiting repairs. As we find out more, we will keep you informed. What does “energized” mean? Some areas of Westbury show as “energized” on the map but they do not have power to their homes nor are they provided a restoration date. What does this mean? If your home is marked as energized, it means the circuit has been checked and turned on, if everything is good, then your power comes on. If power is not restored then that means there is an issue such as blown fuse, transformer problem, down line, broken pole, etc. This is called an isolated or nested outage and is then assigned to a different crew by Centerpoint and restoration times for these outages are not available at this time. Centerpoint said they hope to get this changed soon and be able to provide estimates to these homes. Nested outages are actively being addressed and we have seen some fixed in Westbury, it just takes longer. Cooling Centers - the WCC asked for a cooling center in Westbury and we got it! The Shannon Walker library at 11630 Chimney Rock had a giant generator delivered by Centerpoint and will be open starting Sunday, July 15, from 10am to 6pm. While this is not electricity to our homes that we all want and need, this is a great resource right here in our neighborhood and we are very happy to have this space available to residents to cool down and recharge devices. Please share word with your neighbors and friends. Map details - Data from July 14, 2024, 1AM Green lines indicate power on both sides of street Yellow lines indicate power on only one side of the street *this map was created solely by the WCC office manager canvassing the neighborhood at night. We tried to be as accurate as possible but the power restoration in some areas is spotty due to damage. Also, as power is restored, it’s easy to miss a small nested outage. We apologize for any errors. This map is not an official map of Centerpoint. **several errors were fixed from the previous map. Thank you for letting us know.
As of July 13, 2024, 1AM Power restoration in Westbury is progressing but very slowly. Tonight’s canvass showed power restoration to just two streets in Westbury 5 and Parkwest 2, most of the remaining dark homes in Westbury 1 (but not all), the small part of Westbury 3 that is east of Chimney Rock and one half street in Westbury South. At this rate, it appears it could take a very long time for all of Westbury to see power restored. Centerpoint’s Message - “CenterPoint Energy's crews are now on track to restore power to approximately 85% of impacted customers by the end of this weekend, as crews continue to make strong progress in spite of this afternoon's challenging weather. In addition, CenterPoint expects to provide restoration dates tonight to substantially all impacted customers who have not already received one.” Reality - Centerpoint did NOT provide restoration times for ANY home in Westbury on their map. More troublesome is all of Westbury either shows as energized or restoration date pending. The Centerpoint map appears to be inaccurate for large portions of Westbury as big areas show as restoration date still pending but they have had power for over 3 days while other sections show as energized but they do not have power or restoration dates. Centerpoint is obviously having trouble with accurate real time information and this should be taken into account if you view their mapping tool. At this time, it is unclear how exactly Centerpoint is using the term “energized” and we will try to reach out to some contacts to clarify. We would also like to know why areas marked as energized but do not have power, are not given a restoration date or pending. The Westbury Civic Club will reach out again to our city leaders to see what, if any, assistance they can provide in getting us some answers. We live in Houston, this is not our first storm or disaster, we know how to deal with disasters, but we have to have accurate information to prepare and plan properly. Being told to prepare for several days is very different than 2 weeks without power. Cooling centers- the city and county cooling centers remain open. The closest one is Bayland community center, 6400 Bissonnet, 9am-6pm Please check on your neighbors, Especially the elderly. Please reach out to us via messenger if you know of someone that needs ice, water or food.. Noon update July 13th:Crews were seen staged outside Anderson Elementary this morning. We hope this means power will be coming back to Westbury 3, Westbury 4 and Westbury South soon. Martha Castex-Tatum, our District K city council member, is actively trying to get us the answers we need from Centerpoint regarding timing and what things mean on the Centerpoint map. We have requested timing or explanation of damage for the fire department grid restoration that would also turn on the library which could be used as a cooling center. The city has asked Centerpoint to expedite this area. Heavy trash - the City is collecting tree waste heavy trash. Trash crews have been in Westbury 4 the past couple days and in Westbury 5 today. Westbury 1 has also seen debris collection start. We expect the tree waste collection to continue but expect delays due the amount of debris. Every home has tree waste on the curb so the trucks are filling quickly. This takes longer for collection. Please be patient. Recycling - will not be collected. Please pull your cans back from the street as they will not get collected for at least 2 weeks. State and Federal assistance - Individual State of Assessment - fill this out first. https://survey123.arcgis.com/share/344d59d323fd47b3bab8e8cd60b64585?field:incident_id=24-0016%2007JUL%20Tropical%20Weather Federal disaster assistance - FEMA https://www.fema.gov/.../fema-assistance-available-texans...
